AFH Restoring the Gut Microbiome: Defense
The human microbiome is composed of all the microorganisms colonizing the body. Its composition differs according to the location on the body such as the nose, mouth, intestines, vagina, and skin. The microbiome is now considered an essential organ. The complex and diverse gut microbiome is made up of more than 10 trillion bacteria. The gut microbiome contains an estimated 500-1000 species and 100 trillion organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses that encode 100-fold more unique genes than our own genome.
There are 5 main areas of discussion regarding the microbiome. To help you remember we’ll call them the 5 D’s.
Today, we’ll be discussing the Gut Microbiome in terms of Defense or Immunity and show you why high dose probiotics play a major role in Defense and microbiome restoration.
Seventy percent of our immune system resides in the gut. In the first year of life the food we eat, the bacteria, fungi, and viruses in the microbiome, and the environment that we grow up in educate our immune system and set the thermostat for our future immune responses. When we alter our microbiome, environment, or the foods that we eat our immune responses change. For example, antibiotics will kill bad or pathogenic bacteria in a specific microbiome but the gut microbiome is always innocent bystander and good bacteria can get wiped out. This may cause an imbalance or dysbiosis and more damaging bacteria or yeast or fungi may harm our gut lining. Partially digested food or food that normally does not get through the lining may get through and cause an immune response and antibodies to form. Some of these antibodies may by chance fit into normal receptors for the thyroid, joints, or DNA or cause an immune reaction resulting in hyper or hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus. Lipopolysaccharides which make up the walls of bacteria may get through as well as bacteria and cause more inflammation and initiate and self-perpetuating cycle of immune activation and inflammation which can cause all kinds of chronic diseases such as arteriosclerosis, Alzheimer’s, hypothyroidism, and ulcerative colitis.
The gut therefore plays a major role in immune modulation and inflammation. If you quiet the inflammation in the gut the thermostat of inflammation is turned down everywhere. Restoration of the gut microbiome homeostasis is essential. A high dose probiotic with select strains from each of the key bacterial families that make up the microbiome is a major step in this process. Recent clinical research has confirmed high-dose probiotics influence gut health and immunity in ways lower-dose probiotics cannot. When gut immune cells are exposed to probiotics at high concentrations, a rapid increase in the expression of over 1,700 genes occurs, compared to gut immune cells exposed to fewer bacteria. These genes control immune and inflammatory signaling, which helps reset mucosal immunity and calm the Gl tract. This genomic effect was achieved only when using high-dose probiotics. Probio Plus has 225 colony forming units of 6 potent strains from each of the 6 major families of bacteria and a special prebiotic. It is created in a unique process to suspend the bacteria to maximize efficacy and viability upon activation in the gut. Probio Plus quickly reestablishes microbiome balance, strengthens the gut barrier, and promotes inflammatory balance. You can get Probio Plus with this link.
