Benefits of Sleep

Benefits of Sleep from Jeffrey Mark, MD on Vimeo.

Have you had trouble sleeping recently worrying about the present Covid-19 situation? 30% of American adults have some insomnia each year and 10-20% of people have chronic sleep problems.

I mentioned in my last email and video about prevention and keeping a strong immune system ready to defend against viruses and other infections.  One of the first steps is getting a good night’s rest so your body can enter into the deeper stages of sleep so hormones and the parasympathetic system can proceed with rest and repair.

The suggestions I tell people to include having a set sleep time and nighttime ritual, avoiding  “blue” light exposure like watching TV within 3 hours before bedtime and avoiding eating certain foods near bedtime including chocolate which has caffeine, snacking on leftover meat or fish and eating sauerkraut all of which has histamine.  Also, some people are sensitive to electric and magnetic fields and cell phones should be placed in wifi mode outside the bedroom, electronics should be unplugged in the bedroom, and blue tooth emitting devices should also be out of the bedroom.  If you’re not sure you have sleep issues you may take our standard functional medicine sleep questionnaire by going to the link on this screen.

People have also been asking me about what else can be done to boost the immune system. I have another video that you can watch that’s on this screen that includes a link for an offer to get access to an Immune Foundation online course. Also, I’m completing an online course centered around gut health and would like to be sure this course would address your concerns. When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight what’s the biggest challenge,  question,  or frustration you’ve been struggling with?  Please email

Lastly, we are now doing telemedicine but the office is still open in case you need samples to carry you through while waiting for a prescription or need supplements.  We just ask that you call in advance to better serve you. In my next blog I will be addressing stress, fear, and having the best mindset in getting through this crisis. Until then, please free to call or email ( for questions or for more information on how functional medicine can help you. Stay healthy and take care.
