Furry Friends Keep You Happier, Healthier, and Younger

Hi, it’s Dr. Jeffrey mark. Today I’d like to talk to you about a proven alternative to deal with the ongoing stress of life that leads to better health, improved mood, and keeps you younger. This one strategy works well with any of the other functional, anti aging and regenerative  medicine strategies that I’ve been able to use. 

Research has shown that owning a pet has more benefits than just the selfless act of adopting a pet or the added cost of food, care, and housing. Even if you don’t want to have the responsibility of ownship, just walking a neighbor’s dog, cat sitting, or donation of time at the local shelter can bring benefits to your health.  The health benefits include reduced stress, lower blood pressure, improved mood and less depression, better heart health, and  increased exercise.

 

Lower stress

Stress causes a rise in cortisol and your body enters a fight or flight mode.  For  quick stressors that resolve within hours this is an appropriate and helpful response. If the stress continues for days, months, or years the body, mind, and spirit begins to break down. Research has shown that simply petting a dog lowers cortisol and stress. Also, oxytocin, the feel good generosity hormone increases with people interacting with their dogs. This hormone is high with new mothers and bonds them to the new baby.  Surveys have shown that 84 percent of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients with a service dog reported having less symptoms and 40 percent were able to decrease their medications.

Reduce Blood Pressure

The reduction of cortisol and increase oxytocin from petting the dog or cat results in reduced blood pressure. High blood pressure is by itself not a disease but the symptom from a root cause.  Besides cortisol, hormonal changes, chronic pain, chronic infection or toxins exposure. So the pets can help keep the blood pressure lower as the search and treatment for the root causes

 

More Exercise

Many people won’t get up right at sunrise / dawn for themselves but if they have to walk the dog they will manage to get this done.  Walking the dog will be done rain or shine. The side effect for the pet owner is burning off extra calories, strengthening the parasympathetic / Vagal nerve, and  increased muscle mass. 

 

Healthy heart

 

The American Heart Association has a published a report endorsing dog ownership which was found to have decrease cardiovascular disease.

 

Lift your mood while  decreasing the feeling of loneliness

A study done in 2011 found that pet owners have better self-esteem. Other studies showed that pets provided their owners with better social support than even other humans. There is also a sense of purpose for the pet owner.  Also, pet owners have a network of support  with other like minded pet owners.
