Peptides: The Future of Medicine is Here

Many people have asked about the future of medicine and new treatments. Let me give you an overview of the advanced treatments available today that will continue to grow into widespread treatment in the very near future. Peptides represent the culmination of decades of research and are at the cutting edge of anti-aging and regenerative medicine. They are more powerful, more precise, but yet safer to use than anything we’ve had previously. They can be part of the healing process for a shoulder or knee injury, increase muscle and decrease fat, and have made skin more youthful and thickened hair.

Peptides are a different level of communication with the body at the level of the cell to signal the cell to heal, increase its lifespan, and can improve its function so that specific health benefits can be achieved if used correctly. It is a much more specific and sophisticated signaling system than hormones which actually may influence groups of peptides to get to a particular result.

What are peptides? They are made up of clusters of up to 20 amino acids which are the building blocks to make protein which by definition are clusters of amino acids that are more than 20 amino acids. An example of the precision and potency of the peptides is to compare peptides that act on the pituitary gland to make growth hormone. If someone was deficient in growth hormone and took supplemental growth hormone, then any production of natural growth hormone still occurring would be suppressed because your body sees higher levels and is like a thermostat. It doesn’t matter how the temperature is reached but it shuts off the heater or air conditioner at the set temperature and over time if you keep taking the growth hormone or any other hormone, the tissue and function can decrease due to disuse. With peptides in this example, they would signal directly to cells in the pituitary or whatever tissue you  target to make the growth hormone directly and naturally as long as you have functioning tissue and there is no disuse.

What are the forms of peptides?
Oral peptides need to go through the GI tract and may get broken down. Subcutaneous and topical (on the skin) bypasses the GI tract. There are peptides naturally produced in the GI tract and peptides that have an anti-aging effect on the skin and can thicken hair.  Nasal peptides can get through the blood brain barrier to get directly into the brain to enhance memory, stabilize mood, and sharpen mental focus.

Ideally, natural peptides are safest as after their intended signaling is done they are broken down and exit the body. Modified peptides may stay longer on receptors and may result in prolonged signaling that can have more pronounced effects which go beyond natural physiology or the natural response.

New peptides are discovered routinely but may need to be carefully examined before general use. There are peptides that have been around for at least 5 years and have had more extensive use which provides a safety record that can be tracked in the literature.

Peptides do incur a cost with higher cost for the more popularly used and researched long standing peptides. They require at least 2-3 months before seeing an effect such as increased muscle, improved skin and hair, or sharper mental focus and memory.  Even though the peptides will signal to change the body, the body needs to be prepared to institute the changes on a cellular level. Exercise, sleep, detoxification, repairing the GI tract for adequate nutrition, optimizing the immune system, and balancing the hormones all prepare the body to respond strongly and profoundly to the peptide signaling.
