Why you need these B vitamins

vitamin b

Hi, it’s Dr. Jeffrey Mark here.  As you may well know supplements have been an important part of all the programs involving anti-aging, functional,  and regenerative medicine.  We’ve recently discussed how the soil no longer provides abundant nutrients, how we are feeding our livestock with mostly genetically modified grains and corn, and how most of us are not eating a wide enough variety of vegetables and nutrients.  Supplements are a convenience and arguably a necessity in our modern times to optimize our health.  I’ve listed the first 2 most important nutrients to supplement. In my medical practice I see over 80 percent of people are vitamin D deficient while almost 100 percent of my inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune patients have Vitamin D deficiency. So vitamin D was the first nutrient I believe everyone needs to supplement. The number two supplement that I tell people that they definitely should be on is a form of long chain omega three fatty acids the specifically contain some DHA.  These fatty acids help to optimize brain function including memory, learning, and are anti inflammatory.  Today, I’d like to talk about the third major supplement that everyone needs in our present time which are the B vitamins, especially methyl folate and methylcobalamin. Many of the B vitamins are produced by gut bacteria, so if your gut bacteria or microbiome has been altered by pesticides in foods, antibiotic use during your lifetime, or ingesting artificial sweeteners or anti inflammatory medications like advil or naproxen, it is likely that you are deficient in both the active form of folic acid or  methyl folate and the active form of vitamin B12 or methylcobalamin also known as methyl B12. To complicate things a little, you should know that  more than half of the world’s population has one or more mutations of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase  or MTHFR genes, which limits their ability to make the active forms of both vitamins.  It is possible to have a single or double mutation of the two most common genes and therefore you can have a range of functionality or impairment.  The good news is that you can supplement with a tablet containing methylfolate to compensate for any potential genetic mutation. People have about a 50 percent chance of carrying one or more of these single or double mutations so taking  the active forms of methyfolate and methyl B12 just in case is well worth it.

Why should you take these B-vitamin supplements? The main benefit stems from its most basic function which is to contribute a methyl group, thus the names methyl folate or methyl B12, to an amino acid called homocysteine in your bloodstream and that process converts homocysteine into a harmless substance. An elevated homocysteine level is correlated with damage to the inner lining of your blood vessels that is as damaging as the damage caused by elevated cholesterol levels.  Methyl groups are also responsible for turning genetic switches on or off as well. This means while you have a gene to produce certain enzymes or affect certain processes whether the gene expresses itself or turns on or off can be triggered but the environment and the a methyl group is needed.   These B-vitamin supplements almost always lower homocysteine levels to within normal range.

We formulated a product call B Supreme which contains the entire spectrum of B vitamins to support adrenal and neurological functions as well. It is designed to support carbohydrate metabolism, a healthy nervous system with adrenal and Immune Function, support cardiovascular health and support healthy mental function and mood.

It features activated forms of vitamins B2, B6, and B12; benfotiamine, a fat soluble, more physiologically active form of thiamine; and folate as Quatrefolic®, which is proven to have greater stability, solubility, and bioavailability over calcium salt forms of 5-MTHF or methylenetetrahydrofolate.

The activated forms of vitamins B2, B6, and B12 are enhanced in this formulation . For example, one study with the B6 (pyridoxine) found in B-supreme raised B6 levels in everyone while only 33% (one third) of people experience higher levels with standard B6 supplementation.

Benfotiamine is a fat soluble, more physiologically active form of thiamine. This form of thiamine lasts over 3.6 times as long as the regular thiamine salt in standard supplements and therefore the body has more time for complete absorption.

Benfotiamine has 3 additional benefits.  (1) It decreases the glucose metabolites that lead to the dreaded advanced glycation end products (AGEs) which can cause heart disease and Alzheimers; 2)  it protects the retina  by preventing the activation of NF-kappa B;  (3) It can protect the kidneys and endothelial cells or the inner lining of your blood vessels.

Quatrefolic® has folate in a form which is proven to have greater stability, solubility, and bioavailability over calcium salt forms of 5-MTHF  (5-methyltetrahydrofolate). In a study of  Quatrefolic®, people given 5 mg of  Quatrefolic®, experienced plasma levels of 5-MTHF 700% greater than patients given standard folic acid.

Thus, B Supreme with its enhancement of  activated forms of vitamins B2, B6, and B12; benfotiamine, and Quatrefolic® is designed to provide adequate levels of methyl folate and methyl B12 to lower homocysteine to optimize the health of the inner lining of the blood vessels a key indicator of cardiovascular and overall health, allow for adequate gene expression or suppression, and provide all the clinic benefits listed above. These benefits include healthy carbohydrate metabolism, a healthy nervous system with adrenal and Immune Function, cardiovascular health and healthy mental function and mood. Also, advanced glycation end products  or AGEs is reduced resulting  a decrease risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.
